TypeScript is JavaScript with a type system added on top. The compiler checks your code before it runs and catches a whole class of bugs, such as a wrong field name or a missing value, while you are still writing it. It runs anywhere JavaScript runs: browsers, Node.js, React, Angular, Vue and serverless functions.
Most serious JavaScript hiring now expects TypeScript, so you are rarely choosing between the two. The real question is whether a developer can model your data properly, or only adds types to get the compiler to stop complaining.
What a TypeScript developer does
- Write typed front-end and back-end code in React, Angular, Vue, Node.js or NestJS
- Migrate an existing JavaScript codebase to TypeScript one file at a time
- Model API responses and database records as shared types across front end and back end
- Set up compiler settings, linting and build tooling for a project
- Find and fix type errors that hide real bugs in older code
- Write typed SDKs and client libraries for your APIs
What businesses build with it
- SaaS dashboards and admin panels that several developers work on
- Node.js APIs and back-end services
- Shared component libraries used across several products
- Moving an ageing JavaScript app onto a safer footing
- Full-stack apps where front end and back end share one data model
Why teams choose it
- Catches many errors at build time rather than in production
- Editors give accurate autocomplete and safe renaming, which speeds up work on large codebases
- Types act as living documentation, so new developers get up to speed faster
- Trade-off: adds a build step and some upfront effort, which is often not worth it for a small script or a one-page site

Common questions
Should my project use TypeScript or plain JavaScript?
If more than one developer will work on it, or you expect it to be around for more than a few months, use TypeScript. For a small prototype or a simple marketing site, plain JavaScript is fine and a little quicker to start.
Can you convert our existing JavaScript app to TypeScript?
Yes. TypeScript can sit alongside JavaScript, so we migrate one file or module at a time while the app keeps running. We usually start with shared data types and the most bug-prone areas.
