NestJS is a framework for building server-side applications on Node.js with TypeScript. It gives every project the same layout of modules, controllers and services, so a codebase stays readable as the team grows. It runs on Express or Fastify underneath and supports REST, GraphQL, WebSockets, gRPC and microservices.
Hire a NestJS developer when your product already uses TypeScript on the front end and you want one language across the stack. A developer who knows NestJS well will also know dependency injection, testing and how to keep a growing API in order.
What a NestJS developer does
- Design and build REST and GraphQL APIs with modules, controllers and services
- Add authentication and authorisation with guards, JWT and role checks
- Connect to PostgreSQL, MySQL or MongoDB through TypeORM, Prisma or Mongoose
- Build queues, scheduled jobs and microservices that talk over Redis, RabbitMQ, Kafka or gRPC
- Validate request data and write unit and end-to-end tests
- Upgrade older NestJS projects to v12 and its ESM packages
What businesses build with it
- SaaS backends with user accounts, billing and admin APIs
- APIs that sit behind React, Next.js or Angular front ends
- Real-time features such as chat, notifications and live dashboards
- Internal microservices that need a consistent structure across teams
- Backend-for-frontend layers that combine several third-party APIs
Why teams choose it
- One language, TypeScript, across front end and back end
- A fixed project structure that makes handovers and code reviews easier
- Large set of official packages for GraphQL, queues, caching and microservices
- Trade-off: more boilerplate and ceremony than plain Express, which is overkill for a small script or a single-endpoint service
Roles people hire for
- NestJS Developer
- Node.js Backend Developer
- TypeScript Backend Engineer
- Full-Stack TypeScript Developer
Common questions
Should I choose NestJS or plain Express for my API?
Choose NestJS if the API will grow, several developers will work on it, or you want a set structure from the start. Plain Express is fine for a small service with a handful of endpoints. NestJS can run on Express anyway, so existing Express middleware still works.
Can a NestJS developer upgrade our project to NestJS 12?
Yes. Version 12 moved the packages to ES modules and needs a newer Node.js, so the upgrade usually means checking Node versions, dependencies and build settings. The NestJS team provides migration tooling, and existing CommonJS apps can keep running during the move.
