Kubernetes schedules containers across a group of servers and restarts them when they fail. It also rolls out updates and scales services up and down. Managed versions such as EKS, AKS and GKE handle the control plane for you.
A Kubernetes engineer designs the cluster, deployments and monitoring, and keeps it upgraded. Be honest about the need: a small business with one or two apps rarely needs Kubernetes and will pay more in time and hosting to run it.
What a Kubernetes developer does
- Set up and upgrade managed clusters on EKS, AKS or GKE
- Write deployments, services, ingress and Helm charts
- Set up autoscaling, resource limits and health checks
- Add monitoring and logging with Prometheus, Grafana and similar tools
- Set up GitOps delivery with Argo CD or Flux
- Harden clusters with RBAC, network policies and secrets management
What businesses build with it
- Running many microservices for one product
- SaaS platforms that need rolling updates without downtime
- Workloads with large swings in traffic
- Running the same setup across more than one cloud or on-premises
- Batch jobs and machine learning workloads on shared hardware
Why teams choose it
- Standard, portable way to run containers on any major cloud
- Self-healing, rolling updates and autoscaling are built in
- A large set of tools and Helm charts for common software
- Trade-off: it is complex and needs ongoing upgrades. For small setups, Cloud Run, ECS or a single server with Docker is simpler and cheaper

Common questions
Does my small business need Kubernetes?
Usually not. If you run one or two apps, a managed service such as Cloud Run, ECS or App Service, or Docker on a single server, costs less and needs far less upkeep. Kubernetes starts to pay off with many services and steady engineering time to maintain it.
How often does Kubernetes need upgrading?
The project releases a new minor version roughly three times a year and supports only the latest three. Plan an upgrade every few months, or your managed provider may charge extra for extended support or upgrade you automatically.
