.NET is Microsoft's free, open-source platform for building web APIs, web apps, desktop software and background services, mostly in C#. It runs on Windows, Linux and macOS. ASP.NET Core, its web framework, is one of the most used backend frameworks.

Hire a .NET developer when your business runs on Microsoft tools such as Azure, SQL Server or Microsoft 365, or when you have an older .NET Framework application to maintain or move. A good .NET developer knows the gap between legacy .NET Framework and modern .NET, and how to cross it.

What a .NET developer does

  • Build web APIs and web apps with ASP.NET Core, including Blazor and Razor Pages
  • Work with SQL Server and PostgreSQL using Entity Framework Core
  • Integrate with Azure services, Microsoft Entra ID and Microsoft 365
  • Migrate .NET Framework or older .NET versions to .NET 10
  • Build background workers, Windows services and scheduled jobs
  • Write automated tests and set up CI/CD in Azure DevOps or GitHub Actions

What businesses build with it

  • Line-of-business apps, ERP add-ons and internal portals
  • APIs and web apps hosted on Azure
  • Healthcare, finance and government systems with Microsoft stacks
  • Modernising legacy ASP.NET and .NET Framework applications
  • Desktop and cross-platform business tools

Why teams choose it

  • Strong performance and a mature, consistent toolset
  • Clear release and support timeline from Microsoft
  • Close fit with Azure, SQL Server and Microsoft identity
  • Trade-off: most of its value comes from the Microsoft ecosystem; if you are not on Microsoft tools, Node.js, Go or Python can be simpler to hire and host for

Roles people hire for

  • .NET Developer
  • C# Developer
  • ASP.NET Core Developer
  • Full-Stack .NET Developer

Common questions

We are still on .NET 8. Do we need to upgrade?

Yes, soon. Microsoft ends support for .NET 8 and .NET 9 on 10 November 2026, after which they get no security fixes. .NET 10 is the current long-term support release and is the sensible target.

Can you move our old .NET Framework application to modern .NET?

Usually, yes, but it depends on what it uses. Web APIs and class libraries tend to move well, while Web Forms and WCF need rewriting or replacing. A developer should audit the code first and give you a staged plan.
