Docker packages an app and everything it needs into a container image. The same image runs on a laptop, a test server and production, which removes most "works on my machine" problems. Nearly every cloud and CI service can run Docker images.
A Docker developer writes clean Dockerfiles and Compose setups and wires them into your deployment. Even a small team gains from this, and you do not need Kubernetes to use it.
What a Docker developer does
- Write small, secure Dockerfiles with multi-stage builds
- Set up Docker Compose for local development with databases and queues
- Build and push images in CI to Docker Hub, ECR, ACR or Artifact Registry
- Deploy containers to a VPS, Cloud Run, ECS, Azure Container Apps or Kubernetes
- Scan images for vulnerabilities and keep base images patched
- Containerise older apps so they can move between servers
What businesses build with it
- Consistent local development for a whole team
- Moving an app between hosts or clouds without rewriting it
- Running several services, such as API, worker and database, on one server
- Repeatable test environments in CI pipelines
- Preparing an app for Kubernetes later
Why teams choose it
- Same image in development, testing and production
- Works with almost every host, cloud and CI tool
- Very widely used, so skills are easy to find
- Trade-off: images need regular patching, and Docker Desktop needs a paid subscription for larger companies
Roles people hire for
- Docker Developer
- DevOps Engineer
- Containerisation Engineer
- Platform Engineer
Common questions
Do we need Kubernetes if we use Docker?
No. Many businesses run Docker containers with Compose on one server, or on a managed service such as Cloud Run, ECS or Azure Container Apps. Kubernetes is only worth it when you have many services and a team to run it.
Is Docker free for our business?
Docker Engine is open source and free to use on servers. Docker Desktop is free for small businesses and personal use but needs a paid plan above Docker's size and revenue limits, so check their current terms.
