PHP runs a large share of the web, from small business sites to platforms handling millions of requests. Modern PHP looks very little like the PHP people remember from a decade ago: typed properties, real dependency management and frameworks that hold up under load.

Hiring a PHP developer usually means one of two things — maintaining something that already exists and earns money, or building something new on Laravel. Both are normal, and they need slightly different people.

What a PHP developer does

  • Build and maintain server-rendered sites and web applications
  • Write and consume REST APIs
  • Work with MySQL or PostgreSQL, including query performance
  • Integrate payments, email, SMS and third-party services
  • Upgrade legacy code to supported PHP versions

What businesses build with it

  • Business websites with an admin panel the team can actually use
  • Customer portals behind a login
  • E-commerce stores, custom or on WooCommerce
  • Internal tools that replace a spreadsheet

Why teams choose it

  • Cheap, predictable hosting almost anywhere
  • A very large hiring pool, so replacing someone is not a crisis
  • Mature libraries for the boring parts: auth, payments, PDFs, mail

Roles people hire for

  • PHP Developer
  • Laravel Developer
  • Full Stack PHP Developer
  • WordPress Developer

Common questions

Is PHP still worth building on in 2026?

For web applications, yes. PHP 8 is fast, typed and well supported, and Laravel is one of the most productive frameworks in any language. The arguments against PHP are usually about code written fifteen years ago, not about the language today.

Can a PHP developer fix my old site?

Usually. Ask for someone who has done upgrades specifically — moving a site from an unsupported PHP version is a different skill from building something new, and it pays to hire for it deliberately.
