Shopify is a hosted e-commerce platform. Shopify runs the servers, security, checkout and payments, and you pay a monthly plan. That means a small team can run a serious store without looking after any infrastructure.

Most Shopify work is theme development in Liquid, custom apps, and checkout changes built with Shopify Functions and checkout extensions. A good Shopify developer knows what the platform will and won't let you change, so you don't pay for work it later blocks.

What a Shopify developer does

  • Build and customise Online Store 2.0 themes in Liquid, HTML, CSS and JavaScript
  • Build custom and public Shopify apps using the Admin and Storefront GraphQL APIs
  • Move old Shopify Scripts logic for discounts, shipping and payments to Shopify Functions
  • Build headless storefronts with Hydrogen or Next.js on the Storefront API
  • Migrate products, customers and orders from WooCommerce, Magento or other platforms
  • Connect ERP, inventory, accounting and marketing tools through webhooks and APIs

What businesses build with it

  • Direct-to-consumer brand stores
  • B2B wholesale portals with customer-specific pricing
  • Multi-currency and multi-market international stores
  • Subscription and bundle products
  • Headless storefronts for content-heavy brands

Why teams choose it

  • Hosting, security patches and PCI-compliant checkout are handled by Shopify
  • Strong ecosystem of apps and themes, so less custom code is needed
  • Fast to launch; a straightforward store can go live in weeks
  • Trade-off: monthly fees, app subscriptions and transaction fees add up, and checkout and backend logic can only be changed within Shopify's limits

Roles people hire for

  • Shopify Developer
  • Shopify Theme Developer
  • Shopify App Developer
  • Headless Commerce Developer

Common questions

We still used Shopify Scripts. What happens now?

Shopify Scripts stopped running on 30 June 2026, so any discount, shipping or payment rules built with Scripts no longer work. A developer can rebuild that logic with Shopify Functions, or replace it with an app if one already does the job.

Is Shopify the right choice for every store?

No. If you need deep control over checkout, unusual pricing logic or full ownership of your hosting and data, a self-hosted platform such as WooCommerce or Magento may suit you better. For most small and mid-sized brands, Shopify is quicker and cheaper to run.
