Spring Boot is a Java framework for building web applications and services with little setup. It sits on the Spring Framework and bundles a web server, configuration and production features such as health checks and metrics. It is common in banks, insurers, telecoms and other large organisations.
Hire a Spring Boot developer when you run Java systems, need long-term support options, or are building services that must fit into an existing enterprise estate. Experienced Spring developers also know Spring Security, Spring Data and how to split a large application into services.
What a Spring Boot developer does
- Build REST and gRPC services with Spring Web and Spring gRPC
- Secure applications with Spring Security, OAuth2 and single sign-on
- Work with relational databases through Spring Data JPA and Hibernate
- Integrate with Kafka, RabbitMQ and other messaging systems
- Add monitoring with Actuator, Micrometer and OpenTelemetry
- Upgrade older Spring Boot 2.x and 3.x applications to Spring Boot 4
What businesses build with it
- Banking, insurance and payments backends
- Microservices in large enterprise systems
- ERP, CRM and back-office integration services
- High-volume transaction processing and batch jobs
- APIs for mobile apps in regulated industries
Why teams choose it
- Mature, well-documented ecosystem with answers for most enterprise needs
- Predictable release schedule with published open-source and commercial support dates
- Large pool of Java developers, including in India
- Trade-off: heavier memory use and slower start-up than Go or Node.js, and more than a small startup MVP usually needs
Roles people hire for
- Spring Boot Developer
- Java Backend Developer
- Java Microservices Developer
- Senior Java Engineer
Common questions
Should we upgrade from Spring Boot 3 to Spring Boot 4?
For active projects, yes, but plan it. Spring Boot 4 brings major dependency upgrades, so expect code and configuration changes. Open-source support for 3.5 has moved to extended support, so staying on 3.x means paying for commercial support sooner or later.
Is Spring Boot too heavy for a startup?
It can be. For a small MVP, Node.js, FastAPI or Laravel is often faster to build and cheaper to host. Spring Boot pays off when the system will be large, long-lived, or must fit in with existing Java systems.
