Magento comes in two editions: Magento Open Source, which is free, and Adobe Commerce, which is paid. Both are PHP platforms for stores with large catalogues, many store views, B2B pricing and complex integrations. They are powerful but heavy, and need proper hosting and experienced developers.
Magento work is specialised. You need developers who understand its module system, indexing and caching, and who can keep a store on a supported 2.4.x release.
What a Magento developer does
- Build custom Magento 2 modules, themes and admin extensions
- Upgrade stores to supported 2.4.x releases and apply security patches
- Set up multi-store, multi-currency and multi-language storefronts
- Integrate ERP, PIM, OMS and payment systems through REST and GraphQL APIs
- Tune performance with Varnish, OpenSearch, Redis or Valkey, and indexer settings
- Migrate from Magento 1, or from Magento to other platforms
What businesses build with it
- Large catalogue retail with thousands of products
- B2B commerce with company accounts, quotes and shared catalogues
- Multi-brand or multi-country stores run from one install
- Stores with heavy ERP and warehouse integration
- Headless storefronts using the GraphQL API
Why teams choose it
- Handles complex catalogues, pricing and multi-store setups out of the box
- Open Source edition has no licence fee, and you own the code
- Mature API layer for integration-heavy businesses
- Trade-off: hosting and development cost more than Shopify or WooCommerce, and upgrades take real effort. It is usually too much for a small store.
Roles people hire for

Common questions
Our store runs Magento 2.4.6. Do we need to upgrade?
Yes, plan it now. Adobe's standard support for 2.4.6 ended in August 2026, and Adobe Commerce extended support runs to August 2027. Moving to 2.4.8 or 2.4.9 keeps you on releases that still get security fixes.
Is Magento a good choice for a small shop?
Usually not. Magento needs stronger hosting and specialist developers, which is costly for a small catalogue. Shopify or WooCommerce is normally a better fit until your catalogue, pricing rules or integrations become complex.
