Kotlin is the language Google recommends for Android, and Jetpack Compose is now the standard way to build Android screens. Kotlin Multiplatform adds a second option: write business logic once and share it with an iOS app, and with Compose Multiplatform share the UI as well.

The useful hiring question is not just 'can they write Kotlin' but which route suits your product: pure native Android, shared logic with a native iOS UI, or shared UI on both. Our Kotlin developers can explain that trade-off before any code is written, then work by the project, by the hour from $10/hr, or on a monthly basis.

What a Kotlin developer does

  • Build Android screens in Jetpack Compose with Material 3, navigation and state handled through ViewModels
  • Write coroutine- and Flow-based networking, caching and offline storage with Room or SQLDelight
  • Set up Kotlin Multiplatform modules so networking, models and validation are shared with an iOS app
  • Build shared Android and iOS interfaces with Compose Multiplatform where a single UI makes sense
  • Migrate older Java or XML-layout Android code to Kotlin and Compose screen by screen
  • Keep apps on the current Google Play target API level and handle Gradle and dependency upgrades

What businesses build with it

  • Consumer Android apps that need native performance and full access to device features
  • Field-service and logistics apps with offline data sync and barcode or camera use
  • Fintech and banking apps where Android and iOS must apply the same business rules
  • Companion apps for hardware using Bluetooth, NFC or background services
  • Existing Java Android apps that need modernising without a full rewrite

Why teams choose it

  • Null safety and concise syntax catch a class of crashes at compile time that Java apps often ship with
  • Kotlin Multiplatform lets you share only what you choose, from a single validation module to the whole UI
  • First-class support in Android Studio and in Google's own Android libraries and samples
  • Trade-off: sharing code with iOS through Kotlin Multiplatform still needs someone comfortable with Xcode and Swift interop, so it is rarely a one-person Android job

Roles people hire for

  • Kotlin Android Developer
  • Jetpack Compose Developer
  • Kotlin Multiplatform Developer
  • Android Modernisation Engineer

Common questions

Should I choose Kotlin Multiplatform or Flutter for a new app on Android and iOS?

Flutter shares almost everything, including the UI, from a single Dart codebase. Kotlin Multiplatform lets you share logic while keeping native screens, or share the UI too with Compose Multiplatform, and it slots into an existing native Android app more easily. If you already have Kotlin code or Android developers, Multiplatform is usually the smoother route.

Is Compose Multiplatform ready for production iOS apps?

JetBrains declared Compose Multiplatform for iOS stable in version 1.8.0 in May 2025. It works well for many apps, but some newer iOS pieces, such as the native text input in 1.11.0, are still marked experimental, so check your key screens early.

Can you convert our old Java Android app to Kotlin?

Yes. Kotlin and Java run side by side in the same project, so we usually convert module by module and move screens to Jetpack Compose as they are touched. The app keeps shipping throughout rather than waiting for a big-bang rewrite.

What does the Google Play target API rule mean for my app?

Since 31 August 2026, new apps and updates on Google Play must target Android 16 (API level 36). If your app targets an older level, you cannot publish updates until it is raised, which often means testing permission, background and edge-to-edge behaviour changes.
